More Than a Haircut: How 3121 Studio Is Building Cremorne’s (Richmond) Most Personal Barbershop
3121 Studio is an independent barbershop in Richmond, Melbourne, built on one belief: a great haircut should leave you feeling like you belong. We pair luxury, personalised grooming with the warmth of a local shop where the barber knows your name, your cut and how your week went.
3121 Studio was born in 2021, in the middle of the Covid pandemic, while I was on maternity leave. With no family in Australia to lean on, I needed complete flexibility, and opening my own shop felt like the best way to get it. I quickly learned that a new business doesn't hand you flexibility straight away. What it did give me was the chance to build a workplace and a client experience exactly the way I believed they should be. We re named it after Cremorne iconic postcode, 3121, because this suburb has shaped everything we do.

Investing in Melbourne's next generation of barbers
We believe that if independent shops stop training new talent, barbering will be handed to high-volume "churn shops" that put speed ahead of skill. So we built mentoring into our business model.
Every Wednesday, 3121 Studio runs mentored haircuts for $45. Our up-and-coming barber cuts while a senior barber guides and checks the work. Clients get a quality cut at a lower price. Our trainee gets real experience in a supportive setting.

A great cut should still look great on day five. That is why 3121 Studio developed its own range of styling products, chosen from what our barbers use in the chair every day:
Matte Paste for natural hold with no shine.
Curl Cream to define curls and fight Melbourne's humidity.
Texture Powder for instant volume and grip.
Texture Spray for a loose, lived-in finish.
Every client can ask their barber which product suits their cut and how to use it at home. Our own range adds a second revenue stream to the business and keeps our clients' hair looking like it just left the shop.

Richmond is one of Melbourne's most characterful suburbs: footy on match day, Swan Street after work, Bridge Road's shopfronts and a mix of long-time locals and new arrivals. A barbershop here is more than a business. It is one of the places where the neighbourhood catches up.
We lean into that role, and in 2026 we were named Melbourne's Most Community-Focused Barbershop.
